Missing Texas teen Kaytlynn Cargill's body found in landfill
BEDFORD, Texas – A missing 14-year-old's body was found in an Arlington, Texas, landfill on Wednesday.
According to Bedford Police, Kaytlynn Cargill was last seen walking her dog on the evening of June 19. When she didn't return after 30 minutes, her family began looking for her and reported her missing soon thereafter.
CBS DFW reports that Bedford Police initially considered Cargill a runaway, issuing a statement that read, in part: "At this time, we have no reason to believe she is in any danger and we do not have any reason to suspect foul play is involved in her disappearance. Due to this, an Amber Alert is not authorized."
On Friday, the police department issued another statement saying they "are shocked and saddened with this tragic news. We will pursue every lead, leave no stone unturned, and bring the person or persons responsible for Kaytlynn's death to justice."
At a press conference on Friday, Chief Jeff Gibson defended the Bedford Police Department's decision not to activate an Amber Alert and described how the department investigated Cargill's disappearance in the days leading up to the discovery of her body.
"There is nothing that we could have done different," said Chief Gibson.
Gibson said that the medical examiner has not yet determined a cause of death and police do not yet have a suspect or person of interest.
