According to the Hollywood Reporter, NBC, which also aired a special on the singer Adele and an hour of "Dateline," won the night among adults 18-49, a key demographic, and placing second to CBS in total viewership.

CBS aired a block of encores. ABC kicked off two summer shows - "Secret Millionaire" and "Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition" but was down 56 percent, season to season.

It placed behind Fox, which claimed the third-place slot with its block of animation reruns.

The two-hour pageant, at which Miss Rhode Island Olivia Culpo was crowned Miss USA, was the star of the night. It pulled a 1.8 adults rating, giving NBC a 1.5 demo score for the night and 5.8 million viewers.
