Mini school bus, commuter bus crash in N.J.

OLD BRIDGE, N.J. More than a dozen people were injured Thursday in an accident involving a New York City-bound commuter bus and a mini school bus in New Jersey.

Old Bridge Police Capt. Arthur Carullo said the two most severely injured in Thursday morning's accident were both on the commuter bus and included the driver, whose legs were pinned.

A man, 42, and a woman, 31, were reported in critical condition at Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center. Fifteen others were in stable condition at branches of Raritan Bay Medical Center, a hospital spokesman said.

No students were on the school bus, which landed on its side. The police captain said the driver and an aide on that bus were able to escape on their own through a roof hatch.

The school bus was attempting to make a right turn into an apartment complex when it was rear-ended by an Academy bus on Route 9, CBS New York station WINS-AM reports.

The accident occurred one day after a high-speed commuter ferry from New Jersey crashed into a dock in Manhattan, injuring dozens.

The impact of the crash flipped the bus on its side onto a power generator, officials said.

The Academy bus continued up the road, eventually coming to a rest after crashing into a tree. The tree tore through the roof of the bus.

About 40 passengers were on the Academy bus at the time of the accident.

The commuter bus was about midway through its route from Toms River to Wall Street in Manhattan, with four stops left on the run, said Joe Orlando, spokesman for Academy Bus.

The accident closed Route 9 in both directions for hours after the crash.

The accident is under investigation.
