Miguel Martinez, 14, dies after apparent bizarre accident on Texas Tech campus

(CBS/AP) LUBBOCK, Texas - A 14-year-old West Texas boy is dead after he ran into a statue of a bull on the Texas Tech University campus and impaled himself on one of its horns in an apparent bizarre accident.

University spokesman Chris Cook says Miguel Martinez impaled himself while playing hide-and-seek with friends in the pre-dawn hours of Saturday morning.

According to CBS affiliate KCBD, the youth had been staying the night with his best friend, and around 3 a.m. Saturday the friend's family and Miguel went for a walk, which took them to the entrance to Texas Tech's National Ranching Heritage Museum, in the middle of several steer statues.

Miguel reportedly took off running, and accidentally suffered a chest wound when he ran into a horn on one of the statues.

"He just happened to trip over one of the lights. I guess he lost his balance and he went straight down on one of the horns," his mother, Judith Leseberg, told KCBD.  "It's hard for all of us. No mother expects this to happen to their child."
