Michael Caine legally changes his name -- to Michael Caine -- because of ISIS
A lot of people don't know this, but Michael Caine's name isn't really Michael Caine -- or at least it didn't used to be.
Caine was born Maurice Micklewhite, which remained his legal name throughout his celebrated acting career. Until now, that is. Caine confirmed that at 83 years old he has undergone the legal process of officially changing his name to Michael Caine.
What finally made him do it? As it turns out, increased airport security prompted by the rise of ISIS.
"I changed my name when all the stuff started with ISIS," Caine said, according to Yahoo Movies. "An airport security guard would say, 'Hi Michael Caine,' and suddenly I'd give him a passport with a different name on it. I could stand there for an hour. So I changed my name."
Caine began his acting career under the name Michael Scott, but he had to change that when he got to London because someone else was already using it. Caine has explained that he was forced to pick a new one while on the phone with his agent, when he noticed a movie theater poster for "The Caine Mutiny."
"I was opposite the Odeon and I looked up, and my favourite actor is Humphrey Bogart, and there it was," Caine said. "If I'd gone to the Leicester Square theatre, I'd have been called Michael A Hundred and One Dalmatians."
