Mich. woman lied about abduction because she was late for work, got arrested instead, police say
(CBS) SOUTHFIELD, Mich.- Late for work? Have you considered lying about being abducted?
According to police, a Michigan woman did exactly that, lying that she was abducted and forced to withdraw money from an ATM as an excuse for being late to the office after lunch, reported CBS Detroit.
Authorities said when they responded to her call around 12:50 p.m. on Thursday, the woman said she had been sitting in her vehicle when a stranger got in and demanded she take him to a gas station ATM and withdraw cash, reported the station.
Southfield police said they were suspicious of the woman's statement so they went to the gas station and looked at the surveillance tape, said CBS Detroit.
"After reviewing the video it was obvious to officers that [the woman] wasn't being forced to withdraw money from her ATM and thus was filling a false police report for some reason," investigators said in a statement, according to the station.
Police arrested the woman for giving a false statement and took her to the Southfield jail where they then allegedly found a bag of marijuana and some narcotics paraphernalia on her, said CBS Detroit.
After interviewing the woman a second time, she allegedly admitted that she had lied in her statement and felt she had no choice but to go along with her story after a coworker called the police on her behalf, reported the station.
