Miami Hotel Shooting Death a Mystery, and Foul Odor Makes it Even More Mysterious
MIAMI (CBS/WFOR) The Miami Beach Resort and Spa is in the middle of a malodorous murder mystery, after a man was shot to death at the hotel Saturday night, and everyone was then evacuated because of a foul smell that may or may not be linked to the killing.
Police rushed to the waterfront hotel located at 4833 Collins Avenue around 10 p.m. after they received a call that there had been a shooting on the premises, according to CBS affiliate WFOR. When officers arrived, they were met by a man covered in blood claiming that his friend had just been shot on the 11th floor.
The police continued towards where the man had been shot, but noticed a strong, unfamiliar odor which led them to evacuate the building. Not knowing the cause, or if it was hazardous, they called for the hazardous materials team, reports CBS affiliate WFOR.
"Somebody did something in there. This was nothing like a cleaning substance," said Lt. Ignatius Carroll of the Miami Fire Department.
So police evacuated all the guests, including a wedding party that was celebrating on the top floor, and the Prime Minister of Belize who was hosting an event there.
According to WFOR, police did determine that the odor, although strong, appeared to be safe, and they proceeded up to the 11th floor where they found the body of the man with a fatal gunshot wound.
As if the entire episode isn't already mysterious enough, police have not yet publicly identified the shooting victim, and no arrests have been made, either.
Police are trying to determine what led to the shooting and ask anyone with information to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at (305) 471-TIPS.
