Meryl Streep to join Emily Blunt, Lin-Manuel Miranda in "Mary Poppins" sequel
Disney's upcoming "Mary Poppins Returns" could be adding another spoonful of star power, as word got out Friday that Oscar-winner Meryl Streep is in talks to join the cast.
Streep would be joining Emily Blunt and "Hamilton" creator Lin Manuel-Miranda in the "Mary Poppins" sequel, according to Variety. Streep would be taking on the role of Poppins' cousin, Topsy, who did not appear in the original film.
If the deal closes, the film would mark the third time Streep and Blunt have worked together, following "The Devil Wears Prada" and "Into the Woods." The latter film was directed by Rob Marshall, who is also heading up "Mary Poppins Returns."
"Mary Poppins Returns" will take place in Depression-era London, with Poppins (plays by Blunt) visiting the now-adult Banks children -- the brother and sister she tended to in the first film -- following a personal loss. Miranda, fresh off his Tony-winning run in "Hamilton," will play a lamplighter named Jack. The roles of the grown-up Banks children have not yet been cast.
"Mary Poppins Returns" will be released December 25, 2018.
