Mel B. Says Murphy Is Baby's Father
Eddie Murphy has said that he's not sure if he's the father of ex-Spice Girl Melanie Brown's unborn child. Brown, however, says she's quite certain that he is.
"I am obviously upset and distressed at some of the comments made by Eddie Murphy to the media," Brown says in a statement given to The Associated Press on Thursday. "I have no idea why anybody would want to conduct themselves in this kind of manner about such a personal matter in such a public way."
"My main concern is for the well being of my (7-year-old) daughter Phoenix and of course the baby. I was astonished at what Eddie said — there is absolutely no question that Eddie is the father," the statement said.
In an interview with a Dutch TV show, Murphy expressed doubts that he is the father of the baby Brown is carrying.
When an interviewer asked the "Dreamgirls" star if he was happy with the former Spice Girl because she is pregnant with his child, Murphy said, laughing: "But, no, you're being presumptuous. We're not together anymore. We don't know whose child that is until it comes out and has a blood test. You shouldn't jump to conclusions."
People magazine reported Monday that Murphy, whose marriage to Nicole Mitchell ended in April, is now dating Tracey Edmonds, the ex-wife of singer Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds.
Murphy and Edmonds attended the New York premiere of his new film.

When asked why Brown wasn't in the movie "Dreamgirls," Murphy replied, "we were finished (with the movie) by the time Mel B. popped up."
