Opponent | Ross Pierpont(R) |
Race Outlook | Strong Democratic |
This race pits two Maryland legends against each other - only one, however, has held elective office. Democrat incumbent Barbara Mikulski is being challenged by retired surgeon, Republican Ross Pierpont.
Pierpont gained notoriety by running in and losing 14 previous elections, including his 1966 bid for Governor as a Democrat. After a failed attempt for Senate in 1994, he filed suit against the Washington Post and Baltimore Sun, charging them with holding a monopoly on the news that, "placed [his campaign] in serious jeopardy." He emerged from a field of ten Republican candidates, in September, to win the party nomination.
Mikulski was re-elected to a second term in 1992 carrying 71% of the vote. She announced her candidacy with a three-day statewide campaign swing in April and has taken advantage of her high approval ratings (65% - Mason Dixon poll 9/18-9/20) to build up her war chest to more than $2.4 million (FEC report period ending 9/30). A September Mason-Dixon/PMR poll put Mikulsk50-points ahead of her opponent. Most expect her to glide to a third term.

Opponent | Former State Rep. Ellen Sauerbrey(R) |
Race outlook | Toss up |
Democratic Gov. Parris Glendening is in a virtual tie in his rematch with Republican challenger Ellen Sauerbrey, according to a recent poll. The Clinton scandal has seen Glendening do more head-spinning than Linda Blair in The Exorcist. Last month, the governor canceled a fund-raiser with Clinton and became a no-show at the president's appearance at a Maryland school. He declared the president to be a poor role model. This month, a smiling Glendening shook hands with Clinton at a Maryland school. "We are proud of you," he said. Sauerberry, who lost to Glendening by fewer than 6,000 votes in 1994, is running a bread-and-butter GOP campaign that emphasizes tax-cutting and fiscal responsibility. |
