Maryland police believe 2 missing kids are dead

GAITHERSBURG, Md. -- Police say they believe two young children who've been missing in suburban Maryland for more than a week are dead, and they're pursuing a homicide case against their mother.

Montgomery County police are searching parks and wooded areas in Clarksburg and Darnestown, outer suburbs of Washingon, D.C., for 3-year-old Sarah Hoggle and 2-year-old Jacob Hoggle.

Their mother, 27-year-old Catherine Hoggle of Clarksburg, was arrested Friday. She was located after she vanished with the children Sept. 8, and the search continued over the weekend for the toddlers. She's been charged with child neglect, obstruction and hindering.

Police said Monday that they also plan to charge her with parental abduction.

Court records don't list an attorney for Hoggle.

Police say Hoggle told investigators that her children were safe, but she wouldn't say where they were.

At a press conference Monday, Montgomery County Police Capt. Darren Francke asked homeowners in Clarksburg and Darnestown to search their property for any sign of the children's bodies, reports CBS affiliate WUSA9.

"If you find what we believe you will, we ask that you back away immediately. Do not touch anything," Francke said at a press conference Monday, reports the station.

Police have searched over 13,000 acres for the two missing children, including in the Darnestown area Sunday, officials said.

Hoggle's common-law husband Troy Turner reported the trio missing Sept. 8 around 8 p.m., according to police.

Turner told police that while he was at work Sept. 7, Catherine's father drove her, two-year-old Jacob and three-year-old Sarah to Catherine's mother's home in Gaithersburg, Md.

Catherine then allegedly borrowed her father's gray, 2007 Nissan Rogue and told her parents that she was going to take Jacob to get some pizza.

Approximately three hours later, Catherine reportedly returned to her mother's home without Jacob or the pizza. She then told her parents that Jacob was at a friend's home and left with Sarah, police say.

Police later determined that Jacob was never at his friend's home.

Early on the morning of Sept. 8, police say Catherine left their home with Sarah and told Turner that she was taking Sarah to a daycare center. When she returned home she told Turner that Sarah and Jacob had been dropped off.

Police said Turner works nights and didn't know that Jacob hadn't come home from his grandparent's home.

Later that day, Turner became concerned when it came time to pick up Sarah and Jacob and Catherine was not forthcoming with information about the children's whereabouts.

He decided to go to a police station to ask for help, but the couple first stopped at a Chick-fil-A and police say Catherine fled.

Hoggle was arrested Friday night after police received a call from a tipster who said her boyfriend had just spoken to Hoggle. When police found Hoggle walking in Germantown, the woman tried to flee, reports the station.

She was reportedly wearing the same clothing that she had been wearing the day she went missing and her hair had been cut.

Hoggle is due in court for a bond review hearing Monday afternoon.
