Mary J. Blige sings to Hillary Clinton about police violence, gets angry about backlash
Mary J. Blige discussed police violence in America with Hillary Clinton for her upcoming show, “The 411.”
She didn’t discuss it, though, so much as she sang about it. Blige sang a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “American Skin (41 Shots),” with the lyrics:
“If an officer stops you, promise me you’ll always be polite
And that you’ll never ever run away
Promise Mama you’ll keep your hands in sight
Is it a gun, is it a knife
Is it a wallet, this is your life
It ain’t no secret
It ain’t no secret
No secret my friend
You can get killed just for living in your American skin.”
Apple Music tweeted the teaser video, saying, “Like you’ve never seen them before. @MaryJBlige sits down with @HillaryClinton.”
In the video, the two are facing each other interview-style, one-on-one, but Blige is singing to Clinton while the presidential candidate looks mildly perplexed.
The video sparked ridicule on Twitter, with fans making fun of the awkward interaction.
Blige got upset and tweeted in response, “EVERYBODY SHUT THE F*** UP!!!!!! #takethat #Haters #crabinabarrel #simpleminded #411.” She later deleted the tweet.
