Marvel celebrates 75 years of Captain America with Comic-Con statue
The Marvel movies contain plenty of jokes about how old Captain America is, but 75? That's old.
The patriotic Marvel Comics hero celebrates his 75th anniversary this year, having been created in 1941 by Jack Kirby and Joe Simon. And to mark the occasion, Marvel is using San Diego Comic-Con to unveil a special tribute: a one-of-a-kind, 13-foot-tall bronze Captain America statue.
The statue -- which literally weighs a ton -- was unveiled at Marvel's Comic-Con booth Wednesday and will be on display throughout the convention, which runs through Sunday. Scale replicas of the statue will be available for purchase as well.
After Comic-Con, Cap's likeness will hit the road, traveling via truck to the character's hometown of Brooklyn, New York, where it will stand proudly for a two-week installation in Prospect Park starting August 10. The statue will then move to the plaza outside the Barclays Center for the month of September and then spend the rest of the year inside a new, yet-to-open Bed Bath and Beyond in Sunset Park.
"To the rest of America and the world, he's Captain America; to us, he'll always be Steve Rogers, 'just a kid from Brooklyn,'" Brooklyn Borough president Eric L. Adams said in a statement. "Brooklyn is proud to be the base of celebrations for Cap's 75th anniversary."
