Martin Montaño Update: N.M. man claims voices in TV told him to attack his mother and her roommate, police say
(CBS) ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Albuquerque man who allegedly stabbed and beat his mother and her roommate and then threw his mother off a bridge on Tuesday, told police voices from his television made him to do it, according to CBS affiliate KRQE.
The station reported that 26-year-old Martin Montaño told authorities that his TV said his mother and her male roommate, Francisco Dominguez, were clones, and that the suspect told police the TV told him to get the clones out of his mother's home.
Montaño allegedly told police that he attacked Dominguez first and then stabbed his mother repeatedly, saying he "cut the clone in the neck and she just kept going."
The station said the suspect told authorities he tried to suffocate his mother and that he beat the two victims with a jagged rock and a pole.
Allegedly, after Montaño attacked the victims, he put them in the trunk of his mom's car and drove them to a bridge over the Rio Grande.
Witnesses told police that around 9:20 a.m. on Tuesday, they saw Montaño take a woman, later identified as 61-year-old Hope Montaño, out of the car and throw her into the river, said the station.
KRQE said that according to the police complaint, one witness intervened as Montaño was taking Dominguez out of the trunk, and that Montaño then left the man on the bridge and drove away.
As he was driving back to his mother's home, police arrested Montaño, reported the station.
One neighbor told the station Tuesday, "I think he's been a troubled young man." She added, "I'm always praying. I'm always going to church. (Hope Montaño) came over and asked me to pray for him."
According to police, Montaño did not believe that the female victim was his mother. He said his family was living below ground, reported KRQE.
Court records said that Montaño previously attacked his mother in August of 2012 because he believed she had demons in her.
The suspect is being held without bond at a local detention center on charges of attempt to commit first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and aggravated burglary, said the station. Police believe more charges will be filed.
