Marion Jones Movie Airs Tonight on ESPN
CBS NEW YORK When it comes to making films, director John Singleton knows a thing or two about injustice and redemption - and this time, he's taking on the rise and fall of track and field superstar Marion Jones.
In his latest film, "Press Pause," Singleton delves into all stages of Jones' life as a rising track and basketball star at the University of North Carolina to becoming the first woman to win five medals (three gold, two bronze) at a single Olympics to accusations of doping, lying to federal investigators, imprisonment and finally,a comeback.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Singleton, who's directed "Boyz n the Hood" and "Poetic Justice," interviews Jones' coaches, teammates, attorney, husband and sportswriters to get a well-rounded perspective of her life.
He also asks the tough question - should she be forgiven?
While Singleton highlights Jones' talents on the court and field, he leaves unanswered questions about the role that racism and sexism played in her conviction and whether she has told the whole truth about her steroid use, the newspaper points out.
But Singleton says that wasn't the focus of the documentary.
So is Jones really getting her life back on track?
Yes she is - and she is currently a guard on the Tulsa Shock WNBA team, and a mother of three. Her second autobiography, "On the Right Track," was recently released by Simon & Schuster.
The documentary debuts tonight at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN as part of its "30-for-30" series.
