(CBS/AP) SYRACUSE, N.Y. - A man accused of raping a 10-year-old girl and murdering her mother after carjacking them at gunpoint from an upstate New York mall pleaded not guilty Friday.

The plea was entered on David Renz's behalf Friday morning in a Syracuse court by his lawyer, who declined to comment afterward, according to various media reports.

The 29-year-old Renz allegedly forced the woman and her daughter into their car at gunpoint after they had left gymnastics class at Great Northern Mall on March 14, according to CBS affiliate WTVH. Authorities say he bound them both with cable ties and then raped the 10-year-old girl.

Shortly after, the mother fought back, allowing her daughter to escape. Officials say that's when Renz strangled and stabbed the woman to death. He was arrested that night.

WTVH reports that Renz was arrested in January on separate federal child pornography charges but was out on a pre-trial release program. The day of the attack on the mother and daughter, he had slipped out of his monitoring bracelet.
