Man charged in N.C. nurse's shooting death

CARY, N.C. - A 36-year-old man charged with fatally shooting a North Carolina nurse in a parking lot in Cary was ordered held without bail Monday, reports CBS affiliate WRAL.

Daniel Remington was taken into custody Saturday night by officers in Fayetteville who saw his car at a home and tracked him down with a police dog.

Remington is charged with murder in the Friday night death of 58-year-old Wendy Johnson, a pediatric home health care nurse.

Cary Police did not give a motive for the shooting. Friends of Johnson said Monday that they do not believe she knew Remington, reports WRAL.

According to the North Carolina Department of Public Safety, Remington spent six years in prison before being released in 2010. His criminal record reportedly includes numerous convictions on charges of assault on a female, larceny, breaking and entering, credit card theft and attempted first-degree burglary. He also has pending drug charges in Lee and Cumberland counties, reports the station.

Jennifer Broderick, a co-worker of Johnson, touted her as "a great person."

"She was the nurse that every family wanted to have come to their door. Every client made such good progress when Wendy was around," Broderick said, according to WRAL.

Broderick said Johnson had two adult children and several grandchildren and that she had recently adopted a 13-year-old boy whom she met while on a mission trip to Jamaica.

Johnson's death marks the fourth homicide in Cary in 2014. The town investigated just one homicide in 2011 and 2013, and no suspicious deaths in 2012.
