Postal worker charged with stealing 7,500 pieces of mail

MALDEN, Mass. - A former Boston-area postal worker is charged with stealing more than 7,500 pieces of mail, including gift cards, cell phones and Christmas presents, according to CBS Boston.

The station says 36-year-old Steven Bozzi, of Malden, , was arrested Saturday in possession of 7,689 pieces of mail in his home – none of which belonged to him.

“For the past three months, we allege, this defendant has been stealing from post office collection boxes from several communities, stealing personal cards, gifts and packages,” said District Attorney Marian Ryan. “Not only did this defendant allegedly defraud our postal service, he stole gifts and cards that were to be exchanged among families and loved ones during the holiday season”

Authorities say the undelivered items were destined for addresses in Malden, and the neighboring towns of Somerville, Medford and Melrose, north of Boston.

According to CBS Boston, the investigation began in January when a Malden business reported that Bozzi was attempting to use a gift card that had been voided because the person who purchased it never received it in the mail.

Bozzi was arraigned Monday and ordered held on $2,500 cash bail. He told police that he stole the mail because he had a drug problem.

All the unopened stolen mail is being sent to postal authorities in hopes it can still complete its appointed rounds.

Anyone who believes their mail may have stolen is asked to file a report with the USPS Office of the Inspector General by emailing their name, address, the date mail was sent, and specific contents of the items mailed to prossi@uspsoig.gov.
