Makeover For Mountain Momma

On Wednesday morning, stylist David Evangelista continues his trip around America, making over Early Show viewers who have asked for a whole new look for the new year.

For the mid-week makeover, he visited the town of Arvada, Colo., a suburb of Denver, to make over Robin Thom, an about-to-be 45-year-old woman who needs some help.

Thom wrote Evangelista, saying:

Hi, David.

My name is Robin Thom. I have lived in the Denver area since I was 2 years old. I have been married to a wonderful man for almost 27 years. We have 4 children ages 17, 20, 21 and 25. They have never seen me look any different than I do now: Long straight hair wearing a T-shirt and jeans. Well, maybe I have a few more wrinkles now! They all think it's time for me to get with it and change my look. I'm starting to agree with them, but am not sure how to go about it.

We all think it would be quite exciting if you choose me. So, go ahead and choose me!!

Thanks,
Robin Thom

Thom caught Evangelista's attention with the "before" shot that she attached to her Email. It shows her hair reaching to her waist, overpowering her small, 5-foot 4-inch frame.

Evangelista cut off a lot of her hair, "12 inches,"to be exact. "She needed an update with her style," he says. "She works from home. But now she's taking her work out of home into the workplace."

The hairstyle Evangelista gave her is above the shoulder so she can pull it back if she wants to, he explained. "I didn't want to lose the essence of Robin. I went in the front and put some layers in the crown and everywhere else so it will have some movement and not too triangular."

As for the color, Kelly from the Luxe Salon in Denver turned Thom's mousy brown color into a richer brown with a few highlights at the crown of the head.

About Kelly's work, Evangelista said, "She rocks! She really pumped this up. My mouth is salivating. She went in with some pretty, pretty golden highlights. I love the highlights because it's not hard stripes. It's like really, really soft and it's so soft with her skin."

Dawn, also from the Luxe Salon, gave Thom a makeup palate that she can work with every day.

"The Luxe Salon rocks, baby," Evangelista exclaimed enthusiastically, "Robin had a lot of red in her skin before. Dawn went through and put a green base on her first, to cut the red out, and then, she put foundation to even out the redness; she pumped up her blue eyes and added a little gloss on the lips to make it simple."

Thom's outfit came from Nordstrom. Evangelista says, "I wanted to give her a suit that she could take with her on the road and make it professional. But, also, I put a few trends in here that will supersede anything. For the spring, chiffon is the hottest thing, right now - a little chiffon top underneath this really great cotton suit. And ladies at home, you don't need to wear the heels in the spring." Flats are hot as well.

So how does Thom like her new look?

"It's so light now. It's gone," she says about her hair. She is donating her shorn ponytail to the Locks of Love organization, which makes wigs for sick children who are losing or have lost their hair.

Interestingly, Thom's 7-year-old niece recently visited a children's hospital with her school and met several children with cancer. When she heard that her aunt was going to be donating her hair to Locks of Love, Thom says her niece "prayed all night, and decided the next day to cut her hair and donate it to Locks of Love too." So The Early Show will have two ponytails to send off to the organization Wednesday morning.

A group of Thom's friends and family members were at her house to see the new Robin Thom and gave her a big cheer. "These are my peeps," Evangelista said, acknowledging the support he and his beauty crew got as they worked in Thom's kitchen early Wednesday morning.
