6 hunters accused of illegally killing dozens of hares in Maine

GREAT DUCK ISLAND, Maine -- Five hunters from Massachusetts and one from Maine were accused Saturday of killing 67 more snowshoe hares than they were legally allowed while hunting on a Maine island, reports CBS affiliate WGME.

Game wardens received a tip about the slaughter and confronted the men after their hunt on Great Duck Island, which is owned by The Nature Conservancy, according to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife.

The men had a daily bag limit of 20 hares but killed 87 during their day of hunting, game wardens said. 

All six men received summonses for exceeding the daily bag limit. One of the hunters also received a summons for hunting without a license.

Great Duck Island is in the town limits of Frenchboro and is approximately a 10-mile boat ride from Southwest Harbor.
