Maggie Griffin Makes "A-List" with New Book
If you know and love comic Kathy Griffin, then you're probably well acquainted with her mother, Maggie.
Maggie isn't content to just co-star on Kathy's reality show, "My Life on the D-List." She also wants to join Kathy on the best-seller list, with her new book, titled "Tip It!"
She and Kathy explained to Early Show co-anchor Julie Chen exactly what that means.
Kathy is the headliner of the show. She banters with co-star Maggie like they've known each other for decades. That's because they have. The 90-year-old sensation is Kathy's mom.
Now, Maggie puts her nine decades of wisdom into a new memoir, "Tip It!"
So what does "Tip It" refer to, exactly?
"It's kind of hard to explain," Maggie said.
Kathy, pointing to the glass of wine in Maggie's hand, jokingly asked, "Does it have anything to do with what you're holding in your hand?"
"Well, yes, it does, a little bit," Maggie admitted.
Where better to talk about the philosophy of wine than a bar, in the heart of Maggie's West Hollywood neighborhood?
"When you have your glass and you say 'Cheers,' each one says 'Cheers,' and then you say, 'tTp it!' And we all tip the glass to drink it," Maggie added.
Maggie agreed that "tip it" are words to live by.
"Now, this is not technically recommended by the surgeon general," Kathy joked. "And we're not here on behalf of that department."
But at 90 years old, she's doing something right.
And it shows. Hundreds of fans turned-out when mother and daughter teamed up for their recent book signing.
What's Maggie's secret to looking this way at 90? Tipping it?
"Oh, having a wonderful daughter. I was told to say that, as you can imagine," she said.
"But you weren't told to say I was told to say that," Kathy laughed.
"But, I really don't know," Maggie said. "I think just having a life of humor and wonderful family and..."
"Junk food and booze?" Kathy said.
"Junk food and just fun," Maggie added.
Although it may appear that Kathy and Maggie are exact opposites of eachother, they are more similar than they let on.
While Maggie acts as if she censors herself, she really doesn't, according to Kathy, because when she has some wine, some curse words might come out. Maggie denies this of course!
"Tip It!" is subtitled "The World According to Maggie"... but it includes a running commentary by Kathy.
"She wrote a book that was complete BS. It was like she was June Cleaver and wrote this book about how we had this kind of idyllic family. And then I'm a little bit of the truth teller. So I do inject a few of my comments. Which she did not approve," Kathy said.
For example, Maggie writes, "As a mother, you just don't know what's in store for your child." Then this from Kathy: "Especially with an 'accident baby.'"
It's hard to tell if Kathy "hijacked" the book as she says, or if her mother approved her hilarious commentary in the book sober or under the influence.
Regardless of how the negotiations went down, the book is sure to make readers laugh.
Now, "Tip It!" has one other meaning, according to Maggie.
"I'm sure you're all familiar with boxed wine. To get every last drop out of the box... and out of life... you just have to 'Tip It!' It's obviously working for Maggie and her daughter," Chen said.
