Luis Guzman on his most interesting character and the upcoming election
Luis Guzman is one of Hollywood's most familiar faces -- the actor has been in movies and TV shows ranging "Oz" to "Narcos" to "Code Black." But according to the new Dos Equis campaign, he is only the 8,507th most interesting man in the world.
Guzman talked to CBS News about his ranking, which of his characters he thinks are more interesting than his real-life persona and what he thinks of the upcoming election.
You're the 8,507th most interesting person in the world. Are you insulted that Erin Andrews (5,008th most interesting person in the world) beat you?
I'm not insulted. I'll tell you why. There are a quadrillion people in this universe, so that number -- it don't mean I can't overtake her. I'm happy for her but I'm ecstatic for myself.
You've had so many different roles. You've been in "Traffic," "Narcos," "Code Black" -- which of those characters do you think are more interesting than your real-life persona?
I would have to say it has to be Nurse Jesse on "Code Black."
Why's that?
Because you deal with people every day. In a year as a nurse you can deal with thousands of people and every scenario is different.
What would you be if you were not an actor?
A social worker.
What is "Puerto Ricans in Paris" about?
It's a buddy movie. A comedy. I produced it. We shot it in 17 days in Prague, Paris and New York. It was written by Ian Edelman, who wrote and created "How to Make It in America." We got Kanye and Pit Bull in the movie. They were generous enough and it's my brand of comedy.
You're from New York City but you left for Vermont. What do you miss the most?
What I miss most about New York is my mom's cooking because she's still in New York. But I learned from watching her. I miss my friends, I miss the ambience. The neighborhood.
What's your mom's signature dish?
Arroz con gandules y pernil. You're going to have to translate that on Google.
Onto something more serious. You've talked about the Latino vote in the U.S. What are your thoughts on the presidential race and Trump?
I'm still waiting to see what happens in the next six weeks. Something's going to happen, I don't know what.
Do you know who you're voting for yet?
No, but let's just say this: I'm not voting for Trump. But I'm still the 8,507th most interesting man in the world. I don't think he ranks anywhere near that.
You tweeted about the Orlando mass shooting. What do you think needs to happen to prevent another tragedy like that from happening?
I think people in Washington need to be more compassionate and show some real heart for people in this country. These shootings have happened in the theater, church -- and it's going to happen again.
What else are you working on?
I'm doing "Roadies" for Showtime and returning to "Code Black" on CBS.
