Long Island Office Shooting Update: Getaway car found; manhunt continues for suspect Sang Ho Kim
(CBS) GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - Authorities say they have located the getaway vehicle used by Sang Ho Kim, the suspect in Wednesday's office shooting in East Garden City, N.Y. that left one dead, but Kim remains at large, reports CBS New York.
Police said they found Kim's white Honda SUV abandoned in Sandy Beach Park in Putnam County, N.Y. around 11 p.m. Wednesday. Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano said police believe the 63-year-old Kim of Queens may have fled on foot and they are searching for him in a wooded area nearby.
Mangano would not comment on reports that Kim wrote a suicide note or that he told a relative he was going to kill himself, CBS New York's radio affiliate 1010 WINS reported.
As a result of the ongoing manhunt, schools in the Haldane Central School District in Putnam County are closed Thursday. The Beacon City School District has also initiated a "lock-out" as a precautionary measure for all schools, meaning no one is being allowed in or out of school buildings.
Just after 10 a.m. Wednesday, Kim walked into Savenergy, a lighting-fixture importing company located in East Garden City, and opened fire on the company's chief executive officer and an employee, police said.
"The motive here appears to be a work-related motive," Nassau County police Chief Steven Skrynecki said. "There was some disgruntlement between him and the company he was attacking. We have nothing to suggest that this individual is on a random, shooting rampage."
Skrynecki said police believe Kim once worked as a vendor for the company.
"We do not, at this point, believe he is a threat to the general public, but of course, he is a very dangerous individual," Skrynecki said.
The unidentified worker died. The CEO, John Choi, was in the intensive care unit in critical condition, Nassau University Medical Center spokeswoman Shelley Lotenberg said, according to the station.
After the shooting, police said Kim took off in the SUV. He was last seen wearing a red shirt with a gray or brown suit jacket, Nassau County police said.
The shooting sparked a widespread lockdown at area schools and colleges and nearby Roosevelt Field Mall.
Kim is considered armed and dangerous and police have urged anybody who may spot him or anybody who has information about him to contact authorities immediately.
Police say a $5,000 reward is being offered for information in the case.
Anyone with information is asked to Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS.
