LOS ANGELES (CBS/AP) Prosecutors have formally charged Lindsay Lohan with felony grand theft related to a $2,500 necklace allegedly taken from a California jewelry store last month.

The 24-year-old actress was charged Wednesday and is due to be arraigned at 1:30 p.m., Pacific time.

Lohan's attorney, Shawn Chapman Holley, has denied the necklace was stolen.

Prosecutors are asking that bail be set at $20,000.

The charge is the latest legal problem for the starlet, who remains on probation for a 2007 drunken driving case. The judge overseeing her case told Lohan in October that he would send her to jail for 180 days if she violated her probation before her next court appearance, set for Feb.25.

Police began investigating Lohan for theft of the necklace, described to be a "one-of-a-kind" piece made of gold and semi-precious stones, after a store in the beachside community of Venice reported it missing on Jan. 22.

The 24-year-old actress "allegedly walked out of the store with the necklace," a statement from the district attorney's office said, according to CNN. "The owner reported the theft to the Los Angeles Police Department, which investigated the allegation and presented evidence to the D.A.'s office last week."

Detectives obtained a search warrant to try to retrieve the item from Lohan's home, but it was turned into a police station by a Lohan associate before any search was made.
