"Let's Talk iPhone" Apple press conference live blog

(CBS) - The new iPhone may launch today and you can get the live updates from the folks at CNET. The buzz has never been more intense as chief executive officer Tim Cook takes the stage at the Apple press conference. (And no, he's not in a black turtleneck.) 

"Good morning, this is my first product launch since being named CEO. I'm sure you didn't know that," he said  as the crowd laughed. "It's a pleasure to host you today. I love Apple. I consider it the privilege of a lifetime to work here and I'm very excited about this new role," Cook said this morning from the "Let's talk iPhone" event.

Cook is expected to announce the iPhone 4GS, iOS5 and new iPods.

1:37 p.m.

iOS 5 to be released October 12.

1:42 p.m.

"Find my Friends" app is announced. 

1:48 p.m.

Senior vice president of worldwide product marketing Phil Shiller announces, "We still love music, and we're still making great iPods."

1:50 p.m.

New iPod nano will come in 7 colors, 8GB is $129, 16GB is $149.

1:54 p.m.

New iPod Touch will come with iOS5 and iCloud. Available in black and white. 8GB for $199, 32GB for $299, 64GB for $399.

Now for the iPhone 4S

"As you've heard, it's the number one smartphone in the world. People have been wondering, how do you follow up a hit product like the iPhone 4?" says Shiller.

Shiller announces new iPhone will ship with A5 chip, have Retina display (duh), dual-core CPU, dual-core graphics and will be 7 times faster than the previous iPhone.

2 p.m.

"You'd think if you put a CPU like that you'd sacrifice battery life," Shiller says. Talk time has been increased to 8 hours.

A second wireless system is announced!

"Our engineering team has worked really hard to advance the state of the art that's never been done in a phone before. It can now intelligently switch between two antennas between send and receive to make even better call quality," Shiller says.

2:02 p.m.

Shiller announces speeds will be doubled up to 14.4Mbps download.

"Where have I heard these numbers before? This is what our competitors call 4G... the iPhone 4S is just as fast as all of these phones, even faster in real-world use," Shiller says. Zing!

2:04 p.m.

iPhone 4S camera will have 8 megapixel sensor.

2:09 p.m.

1080p HD video, image stabilization and real-time noise reduction announced. It will be a "world phone" with GSM and CDMA technology. 

2:19 p.m.

Siri app demo. "Your intelligent assistant that helps you get things done just by talking."

The personal assistant app will come with iPhone 4S. It takes dictation, makes appointments and will support English, French and German. 

2:35 p.m.

iPhone 4 will now be available in black and white for $99 and the 3GS will be free. Pre-orders start October 7, available October 14. 

2:36 p.m.

iPhone is coming to Sprint.

2:41 p.m.

CONFIRMED: No iPhone 5 was announced at Apple's "Let's talk iPhone" event.
