Last Minute Travel Deals

It's the holiday season, and many folks are scrambling to find a reliable, economic way to get home for the festivities. Genevieve Brown, Sr. Editor for Travelocity.com, has some great news for last minute travelers; air fares are finally going down.

According to Brown, the average air fare has fallen $53.00 since Thanksgiving. While that may not sound like a lot, it's actually very significant. "It's the first time we've actually seen the price of air fare come down around a peak travel season," says Brown.

While many discounts originate from top airport hubs, Brown adds that lower prices seem to be the trend across the board. "Be flexible with your dates," she says. Peak travel dates will have higher fares.

Booking a travel package will also save you some money this season. Surf the web or call your travel agent to find last minute packages that include both air fare and hotel accommodations. You could save hundreds of dollars by booking them together instead of separately. "The average savings on booking a vacation package is $315 per booking," says Brown.

While you're browsing the internet for travel packages, try to find promotional codes as well. Promo codes - often entered online during checkout - can save you even more money. For example, www.travelocity.com is offering Bonus 75. This will save you $75 on any three night hotel stay if you book before December 31, 2008.

Also, Brown suggests doing your homework. Research the place you want to visit before you book anything. You'll be amazed at the discounts and promo codes you can find. Even prime winter destinations, like Vail, Colorado, can be discounted this time of year. "The Lodge at Vail - a Rock Resort - is having rates of $199 per night - that's a four star hotel - when you use the promo code 'BIG'," says Brown. You'll save roughtly 66% off standard room rates.
