The singer made her VMAs entrance in a Victorian-inspired gown and a Mohawk feather headdress atop a long white-and-blue wig.
When she accepted the first award of the broadcast, for Best Female Video, she thanked late fashion icon Alexander McQueen, who designed the dress.
When Gaga came to the stage again later in the night, after winning the award for Best Pop Video, she had changed into a gown that appeared to be made of leather, with a full skirt and spiked corset, and a headdress of black spikes in her hair.
While accepting the award, she remarked that the dress was hard to move in.
And when she stepped up to receive the Video of the Year award - which was given to her by Cher, another icon known for her eyebrow-raising outfits - Gaga was wearing a dress and hat that looked as if they were fashioned out of cuts of meat.
