Officer fired round that hit Korryn Gaines' son, 5, amid standoff
TOWSON, Md. -- Baltimore County Police said Friday that an officer fired a round that hit and wounded the 5-year-old son of a woman whom police fatally shot during a standoff.
The department said in a news release that another medical procedure was performed on the boy Friday at the Johns Hopkins Children's Center. The round was removed from his left cheek, and the boy also suffered an elbow wound, according to police.
Baltimore County Police officers shot and killed 23-year-old Korryn Gaines Aug. 1 after police say she barricaded herself inside her Randallstown apartment with the boy and pointed a shotgun at officers attempting to serve an arrest warrant.
Gaines was wanted for failing to appear in court on charges relating to a March traffic stop.
Police initially said they weren't sure who fired the shot that wounded the boy.
At a vigil held for Gaines on Friday night, loved ones told CBS Baltimore that police should have relied more on family members to save her life.
"They did not use their most precious tool to save her life," said cousin Creo Brady. "It is your job to save lives, not take them, and they did not use every tool available to them to save a life."
Police also filed gun and drug charges against Gaines' boyfriend on Friday. Kareem Courtney, 39, who lived in the apartment with Gaines and was present when police arrived, was charged Friday with nine criminal counts, including possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Courtney fled the apartment early during the incident, and was apprehended nearby.
According to online court records, he faces a preliminary hearing on Sept. 2.
