(CBS) Self-conscious about how you look while working out at the gym? Maybe you should take a cue from Kelly Ripa.

The famously toned co-host of "Live With Regis and Kelly" last week insisted that she would be hard to recognize when she's in workout mode, with her hair in a bun and wearing no makeup.

"I look like Peter Pan!" she told guest co-host - and fellow exercise enthusiast - Bryant Gumbel.

The two discussed their very different approaches to working out.

Ripa loves spinning - riding a stationary bike to the beat of loud music in a group.

"There's power in a group," she said eon the show. "I think everybody really pulls together, and there's something sexy about the sound and look of a unified group of people working out."

Ripa, 40, has been a role model for many since she told Fitness magazine that she started working out seriously for the first time at age 37. She had her doubts about getting started relatively late in life but felt she had to, as she didn't have much energy, she told the magazine.

Ripa, who stands five feet three inches, seems to have stuck with her routine, judging from the sleek silhouette she displayed in a recent spread in Shape magazine.

For his part, Gumbel, 62, prefers to work out alone, and likes silence or mellow music when he jogs and lifts weights.

Judging by the way they look, both approaches seem to be working.
