Kellan Lutz on fitness routine and real-life fights
Kellan Lutz is known for his muscular physique almost as much as he's known for his role as vampire Emmett Cullen in the "Twilight" movies.
It's obvious that Lutz is aware of his reputation as a strapping manly man -- he offered to chop butternut squash for Anna Kendrick once -- and his new video for G.H. Mumm champagne shows off his ruggedness with a motorcycle adventure that takes him from French vineyards to New York. The proud fitness junkie talked to CBS News about how he stays in shape and his upcoming projects.
Tell us about your trip with G.H. Mumm. What was the most fun? It was very "Mission: Impossible."
Everything about it. This trip, mission to deliver was very much a "Mission: Impossible" but we got it done. I love parkour, and parkour in New York and just traversing the city seeing it for all its beauty. And doing the stunts is unlike anything I've ever done. And driving the Von Dutch down on the Hudson River, under the Brooklyn Bridge, round the Statue of Liberty -- that things fast and there's so much traffic on the Hudson and you don't realize how chaotic it can be.
Were you scared?
No. Never scared. But I think the captain of the ship was a bit on edge because I just floored over the wakes.
You love posting workout tips. Do you think you're ever going to start your own fitness brand?
Yes, Kellan Fitness. I would love to start it. It would be a dream. I like being active and I try to be social with the fans out there and if they ask for any advice on working out, I'm more than happy to share because for me I don't like working out. I like "funning" out. I like being creative with my workouts and I make fun little workout videos. Fitness is very important to me. I'd like to create some products. I have some in the works. That's in the near future.
When you have a very busy day coming up and you only have 10 minutes in the morning, what do you do fitness-wise?
Push-ups. I try and do 500 push-ups, which takes way longer than 10 minutes.
Every day?
Yeah. I switch up between push-ups, crunches I do every day, and pull-downs.
How many crunches do you do every day?
I don't know. I don't time myself. I just do them until I can't do any more. That's the best way to get the pump.
You love posting motivational quotes on Twitter. What's your favorite one that's really speaking to you at the moment?
If you don't learn to be happy where you are, you'll never get to where you want to be. It's very true in life. I feel like a lot of people strive for something -- that nice house, car, job, girl, dog -- that whatever that is will make them happy. But if they're not happy with where they're at, that new materialistic thing probably won't satisfy their thirst. You gotta find that somewhere else and find gratitude in your life, currently.
Did it take you a while to figure that out?
No. I always lived a pretty happy life. I didn't come from much. My parents didn't have much and I grew up with a lot of brothers in the house so we all shared everything and I've always lived below my means. My mom really instilled those values. She took us to the thrift shop and cooked massive casseroles for us every night. We had everything we needed but we never splurged. I've always been a saver and I've always been happy with where I'm at, which has helped me in Los Angeles.
How good are you at chopping butternut squash? You had an exchange with Anna Kendrick on Twitter about it.
She never sent me her address! I'm bummed. Anna! I'm waiting -- I got that knife.
Are you a foodie? Do you cook?
My friends and I have had this discussion. I love food but I don't care one ounce how it's presented. I would put chicken in a blender just to get the protein. I'm all about "how good is that food for you? What is it going to do for me? I'll drink some eggs, cool. No, I won't go to that extreme, but I really devour food. I probably should slow down a little bit and enjoy it but I always feel bad for my mother because she spends two hours cooking and we eat it in five minutes.
What's your favorite cheat dish?
Macaroni balls from Cheesecake Factory. Those are delicious.
Emmett, your character from the "Twilight" saga, is known for being a strong fighter. Have you ever gotten into a fistfight in real life?
Yeah. [Laughs.]
What happened?
I got into a couple of fights because I used to box competitively. But we got jumped outside a 7-Eleven. These guys came and I was in my Eclipse. They got in my Eclipse and they came over and they wanted the beers that we had and they pulled my door and my buddy -- we were both fighters -- we ended up kicking the doors and knocked two of the guys down.
The third guy came with a two-by-four, tried to hit me or hit the door -- kicked it. Anyway, so my buddy knocked him out -- anyway, the cops came and we got booked but they let us go because it was self-defense after watching the 7-Eleven video.
Sounds like a great movie scene.
Yeah, I don't know. I'm kind of fearless. I'm not going to put it out there but -- maybe I do too many movies where a guy puts his gun in my face and I just want to take it away and James Bond the guy. I don't know. I don't wish that on me -- no danger like that -- but if it were to happen, I'm not afraid.
Do you have any other projects on the horizon?
"Science Fiction Volume 1" directed by Shane Abbess should come out in a couple of months. And there's also another movie with Li Bingbing and Kelsey Grammer, which is a huge Chinese production that comes out around Halloween, so it's like arachnophobia meets "Indiana Jones." It's creepy crawly and filled with spiders.
