Katie Couric's Notebook: Immigration
But according to a new CBS News/New York Times poll, 78 percent of us agree that the U.S. should be doing more to stop illegal immigration.
But how? Here are a few ideas with broad bipartisan support:
One: Decongesting traffic and adding staff at border crossing points, so fewer law-breakers slip through.
Making sure the border patrol has top-notch equipment, including night vision gear and unmanned aircraft.
Issuing everyone a tamper-proof ID, so employers can easily verify that potential hires are in this country legally.
And increasing penalties for those caught smuggling drugs, guns or human beings.
Tempers have flared these past few weeks, but that passion could push Congress to enact real reform, as long as the most reasonable voices don't get lost...in the scuffle.
That's a page from my notebook.
