In a private hearing Saturday the singer, whose full name is Kalimba Kadjaly Marichal Ibar, signed a statement claiming he was innocent of the charges against him, said his lawyer Elizer Garcia, according to CNN.
Kalimba was jailed Thursday on allegations that he raped a 17-year-old girl on Dec. 19 at a hotel in Cheturnal, the capital of Quitana Roo state, according to prosecutors.
The 28-year-old was deported from El Paso, Texas to the Caribbean city of Cheturnal on a Mexican federal government plane last week for immigration violations.
Garcia, told the Televisa network that Kalimba was in Texas on a business trip when he was arrested, and was not trying to flee.
According to CNN, hundreds of the singer's fans marched out side the Mexican prison where he is being held to show their support. Some carried signs while others yelled, "Let Kalimba out!" and "He is innocent!" reports CNN.
Kalimba is a former member of the Latin pop group OV7. As a child, he performed the singing voice of the young Simba in the Latin American version of "The Lion King" movie.
