NEW YORK (CBS/AP) Julia Stiles says she didn't have anything to do with her "Dexter" co-stars breaking up.

After actors Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter announced their split on Monday, rumors began swirling that Stiles may have been the third party in the breakup.

"I have absolutely nothing to do with the split between Michael and Jennifer," the actress, 29, says in a statement obtained by People magazine on Thursday. "We are good friends and enjoyed working together. This is a personal matter between them, and we should respect their privacy."

"Although I too prefer to keep my private life, private - I felt compelled to dispel the rumors I was somehow the cause for this matter," she added.

Carpenter filed for divorce in Los Angeles on Thursday. She cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for the breakup and is seeking spousal support from Hall.

The actress said in the documents that the couple, who marred on Dec. 1, 2008, separated in August. They have no children together.

Hall plays a serial killer who targets other murderers on "Dexter," which recently concluded its fifth season and earned the actor a Screen Actor's Guild nomination Thursday. The 39-year-old won a SAG trophy earlier this year while successfully battling Hodgkin's lymphoma, a cancer that attacks the lymph nodes. Carpenter plays his sister on the show.
