John Mayer: Taylor Swift song "made me feel terrible"

(CBS News) John Mayer is at it again. After staying under the radar for a while, the singer-songwriter is opening up again in interviews. This time, it's about Taylor Swift.

The two were romantically linked in 2009, and Swift later recorded a track titled "Dear John" for her 2010 "Speak Now" album. Although the 22-year-old Swift hasn't directly revealed the song's subject, there's been much speculation that it centers on her short-lived romance with Mayer. Apparently, he thinks so, too.

In a new interview with Rolling Stone, the 34-year-old musician said he was "really humiliated" by "Dear John," adding, "Because I didn't deserve it. I'm pretty good at taking accountability now, and I never did anything to deserve that. It was a really lousy thing for her to do."

Mayer told the magazine he found out about Swift's feelings only after hearing the song.

"I never got an e-mail. I never got a phone call," he said. "I was really caught off-guard, and it really humiliated me at a time when I'd already been dressed down. I mean, how would you feel if, at the lowest you've ever been, someone kicked you even lower?"

Mayer also took aim at the song itself, saying, "I will say as a songwriter that I think it's kind of cheap songwriting. I know she's the biggest thing in the world, and I'm not trying to sink anybody's ship, but I think it's abusing your talent to rub your hands together and go, 'Wait till he gets a load of this!'"

Mayer topped the album chart last week with "Born and Raised," marking his third No. 1 album. He's been battling ongoing throat issues this year. In March, he postponed tour plans, announcing that he was taking an "indefinite break from live performing."

Mayer previously made headlines when he talked to Playboy about his past relationships with Jennifer Aniston and Jessica Simpson.
