Joe Paterno: "Shocked and saddened" by scandal
Former Penn State Football coach Joe Paterno finally spoke out about the child sex abuse scandal that cost him his job.
Paterno told The Washington Post for an article published over the weekend that he had no idea of a possible dark side to his longtime assistant coach Jerry Sandusky and was "shocked and saddened" by the abuse charges engulfing his beloved university.
The 85-year-old Paterno is currently undergoing chemotherapy for lung cancer and recovering from a broken pelvis - the result of a fall at home.
Sitting in a wheelchair, he told reporter Sally Jenkins that after informing two top schools officials of a 2002 locker room shower incident involving Sanduksy and a young boy, he did not follow up more aggressively out of fear of influencing any internal investigation.
"I didn't know exactly how to handle it and I was afraid to do something that might jeopardize what the university procedure was," he said. "So I backed away and turned it over to some other people. ... I just did what I thought was best."

Those "other people," says Armen Keteyian, were former athletic director Tim Curley and university vice president Gary Schultz. Both are now on trial for lying to a grand jury.
