Melissa Rivers received letter from President Obama
Melissa Rivers hasn't been short on support following the death of her mother, comedian Joan Rivers, earlier this month.
Melissa will appear in the "Fashion Police: Celebrating Joan" E! special airing Friday night, and in a teaser clip she reveals that she received a personal note from President Barack Obama.
"She affected so many people and people you would never expect to have humor," Melissa said of her mother. "I received a letter from the White House, from President Obama. Someone who was often a target of her jokes -- as well as Mrs. Obama -- I received a handwritten note that said, 'Not only did she make us laugh, she made us think. That's one of those things that people now are realizing.'"
Melissa appears in the dedication special with Giuliana Rancic, Kelly Osbourne and George Kotsiopoulos.
Earlier this week, Melissa took to her WhoSay page to thank fans for their condolences and kind words, writing, "It is certainly helping to lift our spirits during this time. We are forever grateful for your kindness and support in continuing to honor my mother's legacy, and for remembering the joy and laughter that she brought to so many."
Joan Rivers was hospitalized on Aug. 28 after she went into cardiac arrest while undergoing a routine procedure at an outpatient surgical clinic. She died on Sept. 4 at age 81. The New York state health department is investigating the circumstances. Dr. Lawrence Cohen, the medical director where Rivers underwent her procedure, is no longer working at Yorkville Endoscopy.
Rivers was remembered at a star-studded funeral in Manhattan attended by family and many celebrity friends, including Hugh Jackman, Sarah Jessica Parker and Whoopi Goldberg.
On Monday, Jerry Seinfeld revealed that she was going to be the lead guest on the new season of his series "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee."
