Norton Shores police Chief Daniel Shaw told The Muskegon Chronicle on Monday that Heeringa likely knew her abductor and they're focusing on identifying a suspect. Shaw says state police behavior analysts are joining the investigative team this week.
The Norton Shores police department announced last week that DNA testing showed a small amount of blood found outside the gas station belonged to Heeringa.
Heeringa disappeared Friday, April 26 around 11 p.m., shortly before she was set to close the station in Norton Shores, near Muskegon. Police said there was no indication of a robbery but that the case was being treated as an abduction.
Authorities have said they are looking to speak to the driver of a gray- or silver-colored minivan, possibly a Chrysler Town and Country, that was seen at the Exxon station at the time of Heeringa's disappearance.
According to MLive, the driver of the van is described as a white male, approximately 30 to 40 years old, 6 feet tall, medium to heavy build with broad shoulders, with light brown or sandy blonde wavy hair parted in the middle. Police said he was last seen wearing a bright red or orange sweatshirt.
Anyone who may have information regarding the disappearance of Jessica Heeringa is asked to call 231-733-2691 or 911. A reward of up to $15,000 has been offered for a tip leading to an arrest in the case.
