Jermaine Green, former NFL player, shot by Fla. police while allegedly holding woman at knifepoint, report says
(CBS) DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Authorities say former NFL player Jermaine Green was shot several times by police in Daytona Beach on Wednesday after he held a woman at knifepoint, according to CBS affiliate WKMG.
Green, 32, was reportedly shot five times by two officers and is listed in critical condition.
Police were reportedly called to the scene at around 2:45 a.m., heard a woman screaming, and say when they entered the home, they found Green holding 37-year-old Katrina Johnson at knifepoint. Police say when Green refused to drop the knife, they opened fired.
According to WKMG, Johnson was shot in the arm by police and was also taken to the hospital.
Daytona Police Chief Mike Chitwood reportedly said, "They give him multiple commands, 'Drop the knife, drop the knife, drop the knife,' but they were left with no other recourse because you see him start to plunge the knife into her chest and they had no other choice to save her life but to open fire."
The relationship between the Green and Johnson is not known. The former NFL player is expected to survive, reports the station.
The officers will be placed on administrative leave as part of a standard procedure. An investigation is underway, according to WKMG.
Green played running back at Washington State University and signed a contract with the New York Giants in 2004. He was cut by the team a few months later.
