Jennifer Lawrence cast at Katniss Everdeen in "The Hunger Games"
(CBS) "The Hunger Games" fans, meet your Katniss Everdeen.
Jennifer Lawrence, who earned an Oscar nomination for her work in "Winter's Bone," will play the heroine in the film adaptation of the first book in Suzanne Collins' highly-popular trilogy.
The news comes via reports in The Wrap and E! Online. A source familiar with the casting told Entertainment Weekly that an official announcement should come shortly.
The series takes place in the future, where teenagers are chosen to battle to the death in an annual televised spectacle called The Hunger Games. Lawrence's character, Katniss, takes her younger sister's place in the event.
According to EW, filming is set to begin later this spring. The film is scheduled for a May 23, 2012, release.
