Jeffrey Willis convicted in death of 2nd Mich. woman

MUSKEGON, Mich. - Jurors convicted a man Wednesday of kidnapping and killing a western Michigan gas station clerk whose body has never been found.

The Muskegon County jury deliberated about 1½ hours before finding Jeffrey Willis, 48, guilty of first-degree murder in the death of 25-year-old Jessica Heeringa, a mother of a 3-year-old son who disappeared in 2013 while working late at a gas station in Norton Shores.

Willis is scheduled to be sentenced June 12. First-degree murder in Michigan carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Willis was also convicted last year in the 2014 fatal shooting of jogger Rebekah Bletsch

Before he was sentenced to life in prison in that case in December, Willis was allowed to leave the courtroom without hearing victim impact statements. He was seen blowing a kiss as he walked out, drawing outrage.

Bletsch's sisters and mother gave tearful statements in which they called Willis a "monster" and told him to "rot in hell," reported Mlive.com.

Wednesday, Willis showed no emotion as the verdicts were read, and he quickly was escorted from the courtroom. Muskegon County Prosecutor D.J. Hilson embraced police investigators who worked for years to build the state's case.

Hilson presented a mostly circumstantial case. He told jurors that Willis had computer files containing information about Bletsch and Heeringa. Although Heeringa's body has not been found, Hilson said there was ample evidence to convict Willis in her death.

But defense attorney Fred Johnson argued there was no evidence Willis killed or kidnapped Heeringa, a woman the public defender described as "living a tumultuous life."

Willis also is expected to stand trial for the 2016 attempted kidnapping of a teenager.

The Detroit Free Press reported that the teen told police she jumped from the moving van, and ran bloody and barefoot in search of help.

The arrest jump-started investigations of the Bletsch homicide and the 2013 disappearance of Heeringa.

A gun, rope, chains, handcuffs and syringes were found in Willis' van. During a court hearing last year, officials testified that a search of Willis' computer revealed videos of necrophilia, "kidnap and kill" videos, and a folder labeled "VICS" with a sub-folder labeled with Bletsch's initials "RSB" and including the date of Bletsch's death, CBS affiliate WWMT reported.
