Jefferson's 'Other' Family
For the first time, The Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation acknowledged that Jefferson, our nation's third president, was most likely the father of at least one of the children born to a slave, named Sally Hemmings.
Memorial Foundation President Daniel Jordan told CBS News Early Show Co-Anchor Jane Clayson the research was not 100 percent conclusive, but the staff thought "the weight of the DNA evidence was compelling and persuasive. We were confident that the weight of evidence suggested this relationship over time."
Julia Westerinen, a descendant of the child directly linked to Jefferson said the news was an affirmation of what the family knew already.
"It's marvelous," Westerinen said. "I have a whole new family now."
She said although she may be asked to be buried at Monticello, she doesn't care to be buried there.
"Why would a save want to return to a plantation to be buried?" she asked. "They have their own family plots and their own places to be buried."
Westerinen said the Jefferson legacy is secure.
"He remains our country's most eloquent spokesman for our highest ideals," Westerinen said. "I think the report will add understanding and insight into Jefferson and into the plantation community at Monticello."
