Jays GM: Wells Won't Be Traded

David Wells joined the Toronto Blue Jays today, four days after the World Series champion New York Yankees traded him for Roger Clemens.

"I'm not knocking the Toronto Blue Jays, they're a fine organization," Wells said on his way into the clubhouse to take his physical, "I've had my ups and downs with this organization, but you've got to turn over a new leaf and just move on."

Wells began his major league career with the Blue Jays in 1987 and spent six years in Toronto before being released.

Until last week, Wells was the toast of New York, a major celebrity following his perfect game against Minnesota last May. Following the stunning trade, Wells went to Miami for a few days of golf.

"I know the business of baseball, it (stinks)," Wells said. "But we have no reason to be discouraged because we're still playing the game."

Toronto general manager Gord Ash said he has no intention of trading Wells. Cleveland and the New York Mets have been mentioned as possible suitors.

"We will not discuss any deals with David Wells," Ash said. "In the words of George Bush: Read my lips - David Wells will not be traded."

Reliever Graeme Lloyd, traded along with Wells and infielder Homer Bush, also returned to the familiar surroundings. He played in the Blue Jays' minor league organizations.

"It looks the same as it used to," Lloyd said. "There are some different names now, but it's still the same situation."
