James Franco slams "Spider-Man" reboot in his "Man of Steel" review
When it comes to movies, it seems everybody's a critic -- including stars working in the business.
Jack-of-all-trades actor, producer, teacher and author James Franco has taken to reviewing movies recently, penning some rather frank and revealing pieces on "The Place Beyond the Pines" and "Man of Steel."
While Franco was impressed with the latest Superman installment (he called it "a great film" in his review for Vice) he did have a bone to pick with another superhero reboot.
When writing about"Man of Steel," Franco took issue with the "new Spider-Man series that arose even before there was time to bury the corpse of the old one and enshroud it in the haze of nostalgia."
Franco had previously starred as Harry Osborn in the original "Spider-Man" film series helmed by Sam Raimi from 2002-2007.
In 2012, Sony Pictures released a reboot film, "The Amazing Spider-Man," featuring an entirely different castand crew from its predecessors. Although that film was deemed a success, Franco is now questioning why a reboot was made so quickly after the last series.
"The answer is, of course, money," Franco wrote. "We are in the film business, and the studios are owned by large corporations who want to make money."
This isn't the first time the 35-year-old actor has spoken out against the latest Spidey flick.
"I mean, they could have strayed a little bit more from the original," Franco told MTV News in January. "I guess they made a lot of money. Congrats. Good for them. Sam and I moved on, we made 'Oz The Great And Powerful.'"
Maybe Franco will be more impressed by "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," now in production.
