Jack Conway Won't Commit to Backing Harry Reid for Dem Leader

Kentucky's Democratic Senate candidate Jack Conway on Wednesday would not say whether he would vote for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to keep his leadership position in the next Congress.

Earlier this month, Conway quietly traveled with Reid on a fundraising trip to Canada.

In an interview with WHAS Radio, Conway would not say who he would support to be the Democratic party's leader, suggesting that Reid may lose his own re-election campaign.

"I don't know," he said. "We don't know the outcome of that race in Nevada. I don't know the outcome of a lot of these races and that kind of falls in the category of 'measuring the drapes.'"

He added: "What I will do is I will go up there and cast my ballot for someone that I respect, someone that I think will be a good leader, and someone who will always listen to me when it comes to representing the interests of Kentucky."

Conway noted that his Republican opponent, Rand Paul, has said he may not support Kentucky's senior senator Mitch McConnell in his bid to maintain his position as Republican leader.

But while there was friction between McConnell and Paul earlier -- McConnell supported Paul's opponent in the Republican primary -- Conway earlier this month traveled with Reid to a fundraising event with trial lawyers in Canada.

Conway also said Paul has tried to "bait" him on the question of whether he would support Reid.

"I guess because he's claiming I was going to vote for Harry Reid, I guess he's throwing [GOP Tea Party candidate] Sharon Angle under the bus, saying that Harry Reid is going to be reelected in Nevada," he said.
