Is Jeff Fisher overrated?

As the NFL coaching carousel swings into high gear this week, Jeff Fisher is the hottest name out there. The former Titans coach is being wooed strongly by the Dolphins and Rams.

And Fisher seems to know he is coveted. Sources have told NFL.com that "Fisher is seeking to be among the higher-paid coaches in the league, in the range of $7 million per season..."

The Dolphins may be able to pay more money than the Rams. But is he worth it?

Fisher's career regular season coaching record with the Titans was a solid but unspectacular 142-120 over 17 years. His postseason record? A less impressive 5-6.

Fisher will forever be remembered for guiding the Titans to the 1999 AFC championship. (The Steve McNair-led team would go on to lose Super Bowl XXIV to the Rams). But even that career highlight required as much luck as it did skill on Fisher's part.

Remember, the Titans needed the "Music City Miracle" (aka the "Buffalo choke") to even make it that far. And then of course there was "The Tackle" in the Super Bowl where receiver Kevin Dyson came up just short of a touchdown as time expired. History revisionists will often say the team "came within inches of winning" the championship. Actually, they came within one yard of tying the game.

The Titans repeated an impressive 13-3 mark the following year but lost to the ultimate Super Bowl champ Ravens in the playoffs. Fisher guided the team to the lofty 13-3 mark as recently as 2008 but that year the Titans lost to Baltimore in the second round of the playoffs.

If you take away those three dominant 13-3 seasons, Fisher achieved a sub-.500 record in his head coaching career those other 14 seasons.

Make no mistake. Fisher is a very good coach. His team was a perennial playoff contender in the 2000s. But he never won a Super Bowl - even with a franchise quarterback in McNair (who won the MVP in 2004) and very strong defensive units.

Could Fisher lead a team like the Dolphins to a championship? It's possible. But it may take a "Miami miracle."
