iPads, computer wiring, tools and even gas, stolen in theft spree in Calif. school district
(CBS) SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - Authorities are looking for thieves who have struck two dozen schools and stolen everything from iPads and electronics, to tools from construction sites, and even gasoline from on-campus vehicles in San Bernardino, CBS Los Angeles reported.
Sgt. Stephen Donahue of the School District Police said 24 burglaries have been reported in July alone - the most recent on Sunday night.
Computers and copper wiring from air conditioners have also been stolen by the suspects, Donahue told the station.
"It's quite concerning to us, especially when people victimize our schools they take money from our kids, which cuts down on their education," Donahue said. "We take this very seriously."
The buildings hit have included elementary and high schools.
"No one's seen them (the thieves)," Donahue told CBS Los Angeles. "They come usually in the middle of the night and they're in and out rather quickly."
District police are uncertain of the dollar amount of what's been stolen so far, considering some schools haven't even had a chance to report missing items.
Once classes get back in session on Monday, August 5, authorities are hoping that having more people around will deter whoever is behind the break-ins.
