Instagram hits 400 million users, outpaces Twitter
Instagram has hit another milestone, reaching 400 million users, including celebrities David Beckham and Caitlyn Jenner.
In a blog post this week, the photo-sharing site said it was "thrilled" to reach 400 million and that the latest growth shows the company is becoming increasingly global. About 75 percent of its users live outside of the United States, and more than half of the 100 million new users live in Europe and Asia. The countries with the most new users include Brazil, Japan and Indonesia.
"When Instagram launched nearly five years ago, 400 million seemed like a distant dream," the company said. "Now, we continue to strive to improve Instagram -- helping you experience the world through images and connect with others through shared passions."
The new figures keep Instagram ahead of Twitter, which has 316 million monthly users. However, it still has a ways to go to catch Facebook, Instagram's owner, which has about 968 million daily users.
Since March 2014, the company doubled its number of users at 200 million. It hit 300 million users in December.
"Instagrammers continue to capture incredible photos and videos from all corners of the earth (and even the solar system). We've seen inspiring moments like the first surface image of Pluto and Champions League celebrations, as well as striking locales like the white pools of Turkey and a Namibian desert ghost town," the company said of the 80 million photos per day shared on the service.
