Instagram hits 300 million users, overtakes Twitter
Instagram announced Wednesday that it has surpassed 300 million active users -- and in doing so, it has also surpassed Twitter, whose active user count stands at 284 million.
In a blog post Wednesday morning, the photo sharing company said, "Over the past four years, what began as two friends with a dream has grown into a global community that shares more than 70 million photos and videos each day."
That growth is growing. Instagram has added 100 million users since March, when it announced that it had hit the 200 million mark. At that time the company cited 50 million new users gained in the previous six months, which means that their growth rate is now about 1.5 times what it was then.
Instagram launched for iPhone in 2010 and added an Android app in April of 2012, seeing 1 million downloads in its first day. Facebook bought the company in November of that year.
