Ian McShane doesn't regret spoiling his "Game of Thrones" appearance
It's best to live with no regrets.
With season six of "Game of Thrones" come and gone, fans can talk freely about what happened -- but some might still be smarting at guest star Ian McShane's willingness to overshare about his appearance earlier this year before the season had even started.
As far as McShane is concerned though, they'll just have to get over it.
"They take it very seriously, some people," McShane told Vulture of the fans' reactions to his spoiler. "Dear God! I mean, I didn't have to sign one of those contracts where you don't talk about it. And on the other hand, if you tease it up, more people will watch it. So it wasn't exactly bad publicity for HBO, you know?"
So if the former "Deadwood" star wasn't too concerned with such matters, what compelled him to take on the role? "They said, 'It's a good, juicy, one-episode part that has a big monologue, and we'd love you to go and do it,'" McShane remembered. "I didn't want to do the whole thing, the whole series. It's a good plot. I got hung. I'm out of there, man."
"Also my grandkids are huge fans of the show -- and my son is -- so it was kind of like, 'Yeah, absolutely, why not?'" he said.
When all is said and done, McShane as an actor said he just doesn't allow himself to take the work too seriously. "Seriously enough to be quite good at it, but not seriously enough to think 'Game of Thrones' is gonna change my life," he said.
