Hurricanes Sign Kevin Hatcher

Kevin Hatcher, a five-time all-star, joined his fifth NHL club on Monday, signing with a Carolina Hurricanes team trying to rebuild its roster.

The one-year contract is worth $1.5 million and includes player and club options for a second year.

The 33-year-old defenseman spent last season with the New York Rangers. He has also played for Washington, Dallas and Pittsburgh since entering the league in 1984.

The Rangers decided earlier this month not to re-sign Hatcher and Mathieu Schneider, using that money on defenseman Valdimir Malakhov, formerly of the New Jersey Devils.

The Hurricanes have lost free agents Gary Roberts, Sean Hill, Paul Coffey and Andrei Kovalenko. Hatcher joins newly signed defenseman Sandis Ozolinsh at Carolina.

Hatcher, who earned $3.1 million last season, had four goals and 19 assists in 74 games for the Rangers. He has 223 goals, 436 assists and 1,354 penalty minutes in 1,100 regular-season NHL games.

Hatcher's brother, Derian, plays for Dallas.
